The Midfielder is Looking to Move Out of the Club
Watford midfielder Hughes is reportedly keen on leaving the club. The 26-year-old is in the final year of his contract and rejected a two-year extension from the Hornets earlier in the summer. The Derby academy graduate missed the early part of last season due to injury struggles and match fitness, but later came on to play an important role for the Hornets in their successful promotion campaign.
The midfielder is yet to play for Watford this season. The 26-year-old’s interest in moving out of the club has seen the Hornets demote the player to the U23s. The situation could potentially lead to Hughes leaving Vicarage road for a cut-price deal. The Hornets are not keen on selling the midfielder for a pittance, and reportedly want a fee higher than £5 million. Watford rejected a £5 million offer from Crystal Palace earlier in the summer.
Hughes has been part of Watford first team since 2017. The midfielder was the first signing for the Hornets during Marco Silva’s managerial tenure. During the four seasons with the club, the 26-year-old has made 118 appearances and scored eight goals.
Watford Have Already Signed a Replacement for Will Hughes
The Hughes situation has already seen Watford sign Turkish international Ozan Tufan on loan from Fenerbahce. The arrival of the midfielder has potentially opened the door for Hughes to leave but the transfer looks unlikely unless his potential suitors meet Watford’s demands. The Hornets have also signed three midfielders inPeter Etebo, Juraj Kucka and Imran Louza, with Tufan becoming the fourth.
