Inter Milan kick off their Serie A campaign this Saturday versus Genoa. They have just lost star man Romelu Lukaku, however, who is now a Chelsea player. According to Gianluca di Marzio, Inter are considering making a move for Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst.
The Dutchman is 29-years-old, so not necessarily a permanent solution, but can play second-fiddle to Lautaro Martinez. Di Marzio mentions that the deal can be made for a fee of around €15-20 million.
Inter Milan Considering Move for Wout Weghorst
How the Forward Would Fit in
Weghorst has been tearing up the Bundesliga since 2018. In his first season, 2018/19, he scored 17 goals in 34 matches. The next season he scored 16 goals in 32 matches. Last season, Weghorst scored 20 goals in 34 matches but also had nine assists. This season he already has two goals in two matches, in the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal.
It’s safe to say that Weghorst is an all-out goal scorer. This, of course, is what Inter need after selling Lukaku. The Belgian scored 24 goals and provided ten assists last season, so that’s a major void to fill. Weghorst doesn’t have the “biggest” club résumé, spending the bulk of his best years at AZ Alkmaar and Wolfsburg, but he has the experience and talent necessary to make the next big leap. More than this too, Inter can expect Weghorst to play at his very best while he attempts to earn a potential starting spot with the Netherlands in the upcoming 2022 World Cup.
Martinez becomes Inter’s go-to scorer with Lukaku offloaded. He’s going to need help, however, and that’s where a tall target man like Weghorst comes into play. Don’t let Weghorst’s height fool you though, as he’s very capable of scoring in a myriad of ways. If Inter hope to compete for another Scudetto, or remain in contention for a Champions League spot, then acquiring a proven goal scorer is absolutely necessary.
