Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has reportedly agreed to sign a long-term contract, ending any uncertainty surrounding his future at Anfield.

According to the Athletic’s David Ornstein, doubts relating to Henderson’s future had started to emerge after talks between the two parties failed to progress in the build-up to this summer’s Euro 2020. However, a breakthrough has been reached in the weeks since, meaning the 31-year-old will continue to lead the 19-time English champions in the years to come.

Jurgen Klopp Involvement Thought to Be Crucial to Skipper’s Extension

Reds midfielder Henderson had never truly been expected to leave the 2019/20 Premier League winners in the next year or two, but the club’s fans can now relax in the knowledge that his future is now all-but sorted.

The exact length of Henderson’s new contract is thought to be a three-year deal with the option of a fourth, which will keep the player at Anfield significantly longer than his existing contract, which is set the expire in June 2023.

With talks between Henderson and Liverpool seemingly in gridlock before the European Championships, the personal involvement of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is understood to have helped the pair come to an agreement.

The German manager was keen to resolve the situation before it became a hindrance to his first-team squad, and will be glad to see Henderson commit his long-term future to the club.

Klopp and Henderson Determined to Win the Premier League Back

The legacy of Jordan Henderson as a Liverpool captain will go down in the club’s history. Having inherited the armband from Steven Gerrard, Henderson has captained the side to success in both the Champions League and the Premier League.

Having lost their domestic crown to Manchester City last season, both Klopp and Henderson will no-doubt be desperate to regain domestic supremacy come the end of the new campaign.

Following an injury-blighted 2020/21 season in which the club secured a third-placed finish, a raft of important first-team players have returned to the Liverpool fold. The likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip were involved as the Reds beat Norwich City 3-0 on the opening day.
