Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the addition of Cristian Romero, reports Alasdair Gold of football.london. The Atalanta centre-back is nearing a €50 million move to North London after weeks of discussions.
Cristian Romero Closing in on Tottenham Move
Saga Finally Drawing to a Close
The Argentine has been one of Tottenham’s main targets since the arrival of Fabio Paratici as the club’s director of football.
Paratici is the architect of a lot of Tottenham’s transfer work this summer, which is a big reason why a number of their targets have been from Serie A.
Indeed, they have already signed one player from Atalanta this summer; goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, formerly of Aston Villa, signed on an initial season-long loan.
Gold now reports that the deal for Romero is in its final stages following the recent news that the defender was set to tell the Atalanta board of his desire to join Tottenham.
Personal terms have long been agreed with the club, meaning it was only discussions between Spurs and Atalanta that needed to be finalised for the deal to go through.
It has been a long, complicated deal, mainly due to Atalanta’s understandable stubbornness over the fee. They are losing one of their top players, so will rightly want to get the fee that they desire.
One Last Hold-Up
The last snag to get over before the deal can finally be done is Atalanta’s wish to bring in a replacement for Romero before they fully sanction his departure.
Matteo Lovato has already joined the club from Verona but they are looking to add another player to their back line and would want that deal to reach an advanced stage before Romero goes.
Everything is expected to go through smoothly, however, so Spurs are likely to land their main target ahead of the new campaign.
