Watford have already made nine senior-squad signings this transfer window. Even though most of their remaining business will be transferring players away, there is still the possibility of a couple more signings being made. With talented, long-serving midfielder Will Hughes out of contract next summer and not yet agreeing to a new deal, the Hornets are considering bringing in Mario Lemina to fill the Englishman’s boots.
Mario Lemina Could Arrive at Watford if Hughes Departs
Little Progress in Negotiations With Will Hughes
Hughes has 118 Watford appearances under his belt since joining from Derby County in 2017. The 26-year-old’s return to fitness upon Xisco Munoz’s arrival at Vicarage Road played a key role in the Hornets’ promotion. Hughes primarily played as a number six, though he can play in more advanced midfield positions or even out wide if necessary.
Adam Leventhal of The Athletic reports that Watford have offered Hughes a five-year contract. He would be one of the club’s highest-paid players if he signs, though Hughes and his agent are thought to be looking at other options as some of the fine details in the contract are not desirable. Even with his contract expiring next season, the Hornets will likely command a hefty sum for his signature.
Mario Lemina Wanted at Watford
Watford already brought in Imran Louza and Peter Etebo to bolster their midfield ranks. However, the hierarchy knows as much quality is needed as possible to preserve the xlub’s Premier League status. With Nathaniel Chalobah also yet to sign a new contract at Vicarage Road with his deal expiring next summer, the Hornets could opt to cash in on him as well.
According to the same report, Lemina is being “strongly considered” by Watford. As Hughes occupied the number six role last season – Lemina’s best position – the former Juventus man would provide a direct replacement in the midfield. For the deep-lying midfield role, it could even be argued Lemina is an upgrade due to how well-versed he is in that position.
A departure from Southampton also seems likely given he has spent the last two seasons away from the club on loan.
