Arsenal are interested in signing Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham on a permanent deal this summer, according to the Telegraph. He is one of the options on Arsenal’s list as the London club looks to revamp their strikeforce.
Arsenal Looking at Tammy Abraham
Abraham Set to Leave
Tammy Abraham looks set to leave Chelsea this summer, although there is no definite destination yet. The 23-year old striker joined Chelsea at U8 level. After loan spells at bristol City, Swansea City and Aston villa, he was integrated into the first-team by then Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.
Lampard arrived at Chelsea in 2019, with Chelsea on a transfer ban. He installed Abraham as his starting striker, and the number nine finished the season with 18 goals across the Premier League and Champions League.
In 2020/21, Abraham found his playing time reduced due to big money arrivals Werner and Havertz. Despite the competition, he got regular minutes, and scored important goals. After Thomas Tuchel’s arrival, however, he fell down the pecking order.
Tuchel mostly preferred a false nine such as Havertz up front. This meant Abraham only got a couple of substitute appearances in the last three months and was left out of the squad for the FA Cup final. He still ended the season with 12 goals. Four of them came in the FA Cup, where he ended as the joint top scorer.
Arsenal Looking for Offensive Reinforcements
Arsenal are looking for strikers this summer. Eddie Nketiah looks likely to leave, while Alexandre Lacazette is edging past his prime as is Aubameyang. Abraham is a young striker with ample experience at the top level. He will provide a readymade option who needs no acclimatisation to the league. Abraham scored six league goals last season despite limited time. No Chelsea player scored more non-penalty goals.
Aston Villa, whom Abraham helped to promotion in 2018/19, are among the clubs that have previously shown interested in signing him. West Ham had one striker last season in Michail Antonio. They have also reportedly shown interest in Abraham as they attempt to shore up their striking options ahead of a season with Europa League action. Chelsea can also offer the striker in part exchange in their attempt to sign Norwegian striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.
Abraham will hold talks soon with Chelsea regarding his future. He is may move if the situation remains the same as last season. Chelsea are unlikely to let him go unless the £40 million price tag is met.
