Losing manager Valérien Ismaël to West Bromwich Albion was already a big enough blow for Barnsley. The damage was done, yet the Baggies were not. They secured the manager that took Barnsley within three wins of the Premier League. Now, to top things off, they’ve taken midfielder Alex Mowatt for free.
The deal, that was rumoured for a few days, comes as little surprise. The midfielder was involved in 15 goals for his side last season and, in truth, a step up was inevitable; Ismaël was always going to take his chief commander with him.
After putting pen to paper, Ismaël expressed his delight at securing Mowatt: “Last year Alex put his performances on the next level. He is an outstanding midfield player with outstanding qualities and mentality. He scores goals outside the box and on set-pieces he is very dangerous.
“He is a hard worker with the right mentality and a lot of energy. The way Alex plays will suit the West Brom mentality.
“He is a leader as well. He is still a young guy but he has a lot of experience. He has hunger and he is the exact profile of player that suits West Bromwich Albion. Alex is the first signing and the first step.
“Signing Alex is important to help the team understand the principles of our play. It will give the guys more confidence and understanding of how we want to play. It will be easier for them to follow him. He is a hard worker with the right mentality and a lot of energy. The way Alex plays will suit the West Brom mentality.”

After another season of promotion failure and the loss of a key star in Andre Ayew, Swansea City will be hoping to have a monumental summer. Securing PSV striker Joel Piroe for an undisclosed fee. The U20 Dutch international was involved in three goals in 12 games for the Eredivisie side last season.
The move is one that considers both the present and the future at Swansea, with his age and ability ticking almost every box.
