Reports by Neil Allen of the Portsmouth News and Mark Donnelly of the Sunderland Echo are indicating that Sunderland are keen to land former AFC Wimbledon striker Joe Pigott. The ex-Dons hitman is now out of contract and would be available on a free transfer. Sunderland, should they wish to sign him, would have competition from both League One and Championship clubs.

Striker Has Choices

Joe Pigott, who helped AFC Wimbledon stay in League One last season with his 22 goals, is in demand. Reports suggest that the 27-year-old has already held talks with Championship sides Bristol City and Luton Town. Portsmouth are also keen but could be priced out of move due to others, including Sunderland, being prepared to offer a higher wage.

Should Sunderland be interested and be able to convince Pigott to remain in League One for at least one more season, the Black Cats could offer the forward the wages he wants. Should this be the case, Sunderland would move to the head of the queue for the in-demand striker.

Who is Joe Pigott?

The 6’2″ striker began his career at Charlton Athletic. He scored his only goal for the club in a 4-0 League Cup victory over Oxford United. Following several loan spells, Charlton released Pigott when his contract expired.

A move to Cambridge United followed. Struggling to force his way into the United first team, Pigott left for Maidstone United, first on loan and then making a permanent switch in the summer of 2017. Fourteen goals followed and by January 2018 he was moving again, this time to AFC Wimbledon for an undisclosed fee.

Pigott settled into his new surroundings immediately, scoring four minutes into his debut. He also made history at the club by scoring the first goal at the new Plough Lane stadium. He left the Dons earlier this summer after three-and-a-half years, scoring 54 goals in all competitions.
