Manchester United have submitted a £50 million bid for Real Madrid and France International Raphael Varane, according to Samuel Luckhurst of Manchester Evening News. However, United have fallen considerably short of Madrid’s valuation of £80 million.
The Red Devils have been long time admirers of the 28-year-old but are unwilling to match Madrid’s price tag, given that his contract expires next summer.

Real Madrid Are Prepared to Sell
Despite the seemingly absurd valuation, Madrid have been prepared to sell Varane this summer. But it remains to be seen whether their stance changes now that Sergio Ramos will depart in the coming weeks.
Los Blancos have already recruited an auxilary centre-back in David Alaba, albeit his recent performances at both club and international level suggest that he can perform to a consistent level all over the pitch.
Madrid are also not in a position to spend a hefty amount this summer. Club President Florentino Perez has urged fans not to expect any marquee signings with financial complications surrounding the Spanish giants.
Competition Expected to Be High for Raphael Varane
Varane demonstrated why he is considered as one of the best centre-backs in world football in France’s 1-0 victory over Germany. His leadership qualities, coupled with his superior physical attributes, make his link with United an exciting one.
But, the Red Devils will not be the only club in the hunt. Both Chelsea and Liverpool have previously been linked with a move for the Frenchman, whilst PSG are also admirers.
With the calibre of opposition in pursuit, United will be hopeful of completing a deal as soon as possible.
Central Defender is Main Priority at Old Trafford
Whilst it would be unjustified to state that Victor Lindelof has not been good enough this season, it seems that United perceive him as more of a replacement than a consistent starter.
Although Varane has been a target for a long time, United have been exploring their options so far this summer. Villareal’s Pau Torres has been linked with both Manchester clubs in recent weeks and is a player with huge potential.
Ibrahima Konate was also linked with a move to Old Trafford before securing his move to Liverpool.
