Chelsea’s fourth placed Premier League finish and Champions League final victory over Manchester City has seen Thomas Tuchel rewarded with a new contract at Stamford Bridge that will keep him at the club for another two years until 2024. He has proven in a short period of time that he can get the best out of his players.
Thomas Tuchel Rewarded With New Contract
Rollercoaster Start to Chelsea Career
German Thomas Tuchel has only been at Chelsea for four months but he has impressed his bosses, especially with his tactical nouse that led Chelsea to their second Champions League success in Portugal on Saturday May 29.
Chelsea were languishing in ninth place when Tuchel was appointed to replace Frank Lampard in January 2021 and was only given an 18 month contract as Roman Abramovich wanted to see how he faired. The pair only met for the first time face to face during the on-field celebrations following the victory in Porto.
There was a feeling that, when Tuchel took over the club, Chelsea were on a downward spiral and the German would have his work cut out but he seemed to fit the club like a glove and, although it is fair to say they were lucky to reach the top four, which was more due to Leicester City’s profligacy than Chelsea’s performances, he got his players to dig in and got them over the line.
The Champions League success was a big motivator for the new contract and where he failed with Paris Saint German in the 2020 Champions League final, he produced a tactical masterclass against Pep Guardiola and Manchester City in 2021.
Previous Roles
Tuchel has a good record when it comes to nurturing talent and when he won the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund in 2016/17 , he had produced the best from the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang, Ousmane Dembele and Christian Pulisic.
When he took over at Dortmund and Mainz, he replaced a certain Jurgen Klopp on both occasions and in his first full season as Chelsea boss he will be looking forward to going head to head against Liverpool and Klopp once more.
If Tuchel can bring the best out of Chelsea and bring in more star quality this summer then fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of a trophy laden season with the German at the helm.
Thomas Tuchel Wants More From Chelsea Career
Following the win in Porto, Tuchel was delighted to talk of how he wants to achieve much more with Chelsea: “I can assure him (Roman Abramovich) that I will stay hungry. That I want the next title. That I feel absolutely happy as a part of a really ambitious club, a strong group that suits my beliefs, my passion about football in the moment perfectly. So my desire is to go for more victories. My desire is to grow as a coach and my desire is to push the group from the first day of the next season.”
The next part of the project will be to take Chelsea back to challenging the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title.
