Raheem Sterling may not have enjoyed the greatest of seasons in the Premier League, but, nonetheless, he is set to be awarded a new Manchester City contract- according to The Telegraph. The news comes as little surprise with the forward showing more than enough in previous seasons to warrant a new deal.
His current deal runs out in 2023, leaving him a free agent by the time he hits 28 but for the reported new deal. The new contract highlights just how important Sterling is to Pep Guardiola. He has become a leader in a relatively young squad, having already experienced 12 trophy wins in his illustrious career.
In a season like no other, he has proven his worth in other ways than goal scoring, with his versatility acting as the key. Whether it be in the false nine role or either wing, Sterling has proved to be an ideal asset for Manchester City this season.

New Contract at Manchester City a Deserved One
As alluded to before, Sterling has experienced a drop off in goal involvement this season. Yet, he has still managed to register 14 goals and 11 assists- highlighting that, even at his worst, he is still a top player. In comparison to last season, the tally of 25 goal involvements is almost half of last seasons’ tally of 41.
But, strangely enough, last season, despite scoring 20 Premier League goals, he came away with nothing more than a runners up medal. Surprisingly, at his worst, Sterling has managed to grab hold of a Premier League winners medal this season. Perhaps it is not always goal involvements that prove whether or not a player is playing their part.
Add in the key factors of a system and positional change, too, and you begin to realise how invaluable Raheem Sterling is to this Manchester City side. The most exciting fact of them all, however, is that the forward is still only 26; he still has years left in his prime to play an integral role amid a younger squad full of potential.
