Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier is reportedly of interest to Manchester United. The Athletic are reporting that the player wants to return to England, and that Old Trafford could be his next destination.
The Red Devils are keen to bring in some competitive back-up for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has been ever-present in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team since his arrival from Crystal Palace in July 2019. The 23-year-old has racked up over 50 appearances in all competitions this season.
Kieran Trippier Could Make Manchester United Switch
England Defender is One Win From La Liga Title
Former Burnley defender Trippier has impressed since moving to Spain from Tottenham Hotspur in 2019, and has honed in on his defensive capabilities under the detailed tutelage of Diego Simeone.
As such, it is expected that Gareth Southgate is planning on naming Trippier in his upcoming England squad for this summer’s delayed Euro 2020 tournament.
In a hotly-contested Spanish title race, Trippier has made 27 La Liga appearances in a campaign which has led Atletico Madrid to one win from a first title since 2014. This is an impressive return from the 30-year-old, given that he had to serve a ten-week suspension in the middle of the season over breaching FA betting rules relating to his transfer from Tottenham.
Question Marks Over Diogo Dalot Future
The very fact that Manchester United are being linked with a new right-back leads to questions over the long-term future of Portuguese defender Diogo Dalot.
The 22-year-old was a José Mourinho signing at Old Trafford, and had been used sparingly by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before being shipped out on loan to AC Milan this season.
Dalot played against his parent club in the Europa League last-16 in March, starting in the first-leg at Old Trafford before being named among the substitutes in the return leg in Milan. A Paul Pogba winner in that second-leg sent Manchester United through to the quarter-finals, and Solskjaer’s side have since gone on to reach the final in Gdansk.
