How Sheffield Wednesday Relegation Can Still Be Avoided

Sheffield Wednesday Relegation

Sheffield Wednesday are seven points away from safety and have just five games left to avoid relegation. With such few games left, the Owls will need to win every game to attempt survival. A feat that will be nigh on impossible considering their current form.

Sheffield Wednesday Won’t Stop Fighting but Should Plan for a Potential Relegation

Manager Darren Moore Refuses to Give Up While Mathematics Say Survival Is a Possibility

Speaking to Yorkshire Live, Moore insists his team won’t give up: “The maths and the numbers are still there and while that’s the case, without a doubt, anybody who knows me will know we’ll be looking towards those three points on Saturday”.

The game this Saturday, April 17, against Bristol City, will be a visit to the last-chance saloon. Bristol City lie in 14th place in the Championship but have not won in their last five games. A small glimmer of hope, perhaps.

If they hope to avoid a drop to the third tier, the Owls will need to show more fight. The Yorkshire outfit are the only club in the top five divisions of English football that are yet to claim a single point after falling behind in a game this season. This will not give any comfort to the worried fans.

Bristol City, Blackburn Rovers, Middlesborough, and Derby County are the five hurdles that Wednesday need to clear. Derby County, in the final game of the season, may prove to be a classic deciding match as the Rams also battle for their survival.

However, without three points against Bristol City, it will be time that Darren Moore and co will have to start planning for life in League One.

No Plans as Yet for Next Season as the Focus Remains on Survival

Speaking to Yorkshire live when quizzed on plans for next season Moore said: “No, I haven’t had a conversation about next season because it’s still all to play for this season.

“I won’t lift my head at all with that and we move on to Saturday which is another important game for us”.

There some who will praise Moore for the ‘never say die’ attitude but more concerned supporters will ask questions about the lack of preparation for relegation. A team the size of Sheffield Wednesday will not want to be stuck in League One for too long and will need to ensure a first-time promotion to limit the damage.

Regardless of any relegation plans, there are still points to play for. But Moore’s insistence on playing out from the back, when all the signs say the team is incapable, is unencouraging. However pleasing it may be to watch nifty passing displays, ultimately three points and an ugly win is better than a good-looking defeat.

With nothing to lose, Moore could change up the system and try to take a smash and grab victory, the classic system for any team devoid of confidence. Although Moore seems set on building a system of attractive, passing football. Certainly, this may benefit the club in the long term, who knows, but right now it seems to be causing more problems.
