Gameweek 31 Fantasy Premier League Captaincy: The Options

Mohamed Salah

  • Goals: 18
  • Assists: 4
  • FPL Points: 182
  • FPL points in the last five matches: 18
  • Price: £12.4
  • Opponents: Aston Villa (home)

Not long ago, captaining Salah at home to a mid-table opponent would have been a no-brainer. However, those days are long gone. The last time Liverpool won at Anfield in the premier league was in December against Tottenham Hotspur. Since then, they have managed to gain a shocking two points from eight games on home soil.

Liverpool lost 3-1 against Real Madrid on Tuesday night and have it all to do in the second leg. However, Salah has scored two goals in the last two matches so he looks in decent scoring touch. Aston Villa are no pushovers though and have performed quite well away from home this season. Emiliano Martinez has kept eight clean sheets away from home including at Leicester City and Arsenal. So, Salah will not have it easy at all.

Harry Kane

  • Goals: 19
  • Assists: 13
  • FPL Points: 204
  • FPL points in the last five matches: 43
  • Price: £11.7
  • Opponents: Manchester United (home)

Tottenham’s performances have not impressed their fans in recent times. One man has kept their Champions League qualification hopes alive in recent weeks and that man is Harry Kane. He is doing almost everything for the side. Son Heung-min should return to the starting lineup this week which will help Kane. However, this could be a very cagey match as Ole Gunnar Solskjær won’t want a repeat of the 6-1 defeat at home earlier in the season. On form, Kane is a good shout for the armband. His record is not great against the red devils though, with just four goals in 14 matches.

Raheem Sterling

  • Goals: 9
  • Assists: 8
  • FPL Points: 136
  • FPL points in the last five matches: 17
  • Price: £11.3
  • Opponents: Leeds United (home)

Second-guessing Pep Guardiola is a dangerous thing. He is well-known for his squad rotation and has been doing it more this season. So, captaining a Manchester City player is very risky indeed. However, Raheem Sterling did not see a single minute of action on Tuesday night and only played for around half an hour last Saturday. This gives him a very good chance to start this weekend. Sterling has happy memories of playing against Leeds United as well as he scored earlier in the season at Elland road. He offers a tantalizing captaincy option with the potential of a huge score.

Chris Wood

  • Goals: 7
  • Assists: 1
  • FPL Points: 93
  • FPL points in the last five matches: 30
  • Price: £6.2
  • Opponents: Newcastle United (home)

Chris Wood is a very unfashionable candidate for the armband on any given week. As a team, Burnley are also rather unfashionable. However, the New-Zealander has scored three matches on the trot and faces a very poor Newcastle United side. The clarets need to win to ease their own relegation worries and this provides an ideal opportunity to pick up three points. Burnley won 1-0 at Turf Moor last season with Wood scoring the winner.

There is no real standout candidate this week. So, it’s time to take a calculated gamble and hope for the best. Raheem Sterling offers a high-risk high reward sort of option whereas one could go with the in-form Kane as well. For the real hipsters, Chris Wood could be a fun option.
