In the past few seasons, Watford increased their international scouting network. One nation they targeted was Colombia. Arrivals from South America usually spend their first few seasons under contract with Watford on loan. Such was the case with Luis Javier Suarez, who signed for the Hertfordshire club in 2017. He never played a match for the Hornets despite prolific loan spells in Spain. In the recent summer transfer window, following the Hornets’ relegation, he departed in a move worth up to eight figures. The Hornets are planning for a different future with Cucho Hernandez.
Watford Want Cucho Hernandez to Stay at Vicarage Road
Successful Loan Spells
The 21-year-old forward signed for Watford in 2017. Hernandez spent his first season in Europe on loan with SD Huesca. The now La Liga side were in the second tier during the first half of his two-year loan spell. In their first-ever top-flight promotion-winning season, Hernandez scored 17 times and assisted six goals in 35 appearances.
The Club were unable to avoid relegation in Hernandez’s second season with SD Huesca, missing out on La Liga safety by a thick margin. Still, Hernandez was pivotal to the positives of their season. Despite only scoring four goals and providing three assists, it was evident the Colombian was continuing to improve.
Watford loaned Hernandez to RCD Mallorca for the 2019/20 season, who were in La Liga at the time. He was absent nearly the entire first half of the season due to injury. After recovering, he further showed signs of why he is so highly-rated. He scored five times and assisted once in 22 appearances. Unfortunately for Hernandez, his side finished in 19th for the second season running, although this time only missing on safety by a narrow margin.
The current season saw Hernandez depart on a high-profile loan back to La Liga. So far for Getafe, Hernandez has scored two times and assisted a further three goals.
Watford Hope to Keep Cucho Hernandez for the Premier League
Although he has been ruled out for the season due to a foot injury, Getafe still want to extend his stay for the 2021/22 campaign. But, according to Marca, Watford do not want to agree to anything involving Hernandez just yet.
With eight matches left in the Championship campaign, the Hornets sit in the automatic promotion spots. The Hertfordshire side know an immediate return to the Premier League is more than just a hopeful possibility. As the Club’s future is up in the air, striking deals for any player would be premature as plans can change at any moment.
If Watford are promoted, then they believe it will be the perfect time for Hernandez to finally make his impact at Vicarage Road. The Hornets are said to not even care what Getafe have to say in the present moment, as not even Watford know exactly what the future holds.
Promotion for the Hornets means Cucho Hernandez will likely play in England, as the Club believes he is top-flight ready. As previously covered by Last Word On Sports, Hernandez would not reject that plan. But, if Watford do miss out on promotion, then perhaps Hernandez will have to follow in Suarez’s footsteps.
