Chris Wilder has officially left his Sheffield United role. Wilder leaves Sheffield United with the Blades sitting rock bottom and on the brink of the dreaded drop. The news comes just one season on from their stunning top-half finish in their first campaign back in the top tier.
His departure comes as a surprise at this point in the season. United are already almost certain for relegation. Now, it’s just about planning ahead of next season and aiming for promotion- with Wilder supposedly among those plans.
Fast-forward to today, however, and Wilder’s departure leaves Sheffield United scrambling for a new manager.
Wiler Leaves Sheffield United Role
Wilder Leaves Sheffield United in Perilous Position
As alluded to before, United are more or less down- making Wilder’s departure all the more baffling. If he was going to leave or face the sack, one would have assumed it would have happened earlier in the season when the Blades’ season was still salvageable.
Yet, here we are, with ten games to go. United are managerless, heading for the drop and have faced the worse of reality checks this season. Last year, they were in the dreamland of the Premier League.
This season, that dream has quickly become a nightmare.
What Next?
Now that Wilder is available, he could take a crucial step up the managerial ladder. He proved his credentials to guide a team with limited resources to a position they could only dream of before, and plenty of on-watching suitors would have been in awe.
Give the former United manager some funds and, chances are, he’ll succeed. Ultimately, Sheffield United failed to back their manager and are now, ironically, paying the price. Next season, and the end of this season, just became all the more challenging without Chris Wilder in the dugout.
