The game between Everton and Manchester City has been called off due to positive cases of COVID-19 within the City squad, Everton have confirmed. It becomes the latest Premier League game to face cancellation following Newcastle United’s similar problem a couple of weeks ago.
The news will worry many fans across English football, who will be desperate to see the action throughout the league continue despite the calling off of Manchester City’s game.
With the game scheduled to take place in just a few hours, the call to cancel the game so late will undoubtedly be questioned by many, perhaps including those within both teams who would have been in deep preparation for Premier League action.

Big Blow for the Premier League
This season, the Premier League has seemingly been dealing with the pandemic with the efficiency needed; games continued, barring Newcastle’s against Aston Villa. Yet, as we approach the end of the year, that control seems to be slipping away with Manchester City the latest team to suffer.
The news deals the Premier League a huge blow and brings several questions which will need answering. Last season, the campaign was forced to be disrupted, and, as the cases increase, questions will be posed to the likes of the FA whether the same action needs to be taken.
For the welfare of the players alone, we could well be stuck without football once again in the Premier League, which is seemingly losing its grasp on the control of the pandemic.
The cancellation leaves Manchester City, who sit sixth on 26 points, with two games in hand on most of the league and Everton with one game in hand on leaders Liverpool, who remain three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
