The 2020 BBC Sports Personality of the Year saw a good night for football with a number of awards going the way of the Premier League.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year Sees Football Win Awards

Liverpool Win Team of the Year

After 19 years, Liverpool finally won another league title as they dominated the 2019/20 Premier League. Liverpool played attacking football and were a joy to watch although opposition fans might disagree. The title win was also Liverpool’s first in the Premier League era and this award is well deserved.

Jurgen Klopp Wins Coach of the Year

Steering Liverpool to that 19th league title and winning it by 18 points was a sign of utter dominance and at one stage they were even 25 points ahead of second place. COVID-19 meant that the season was finished late and there was a stage when Liverpool fans would have been worried that their title might be taken away as uncertainty loomed over whether the season would be finished at all. On winning the award, Jurgen Klopp told the BBC:

“It’s a mix of talent, character, desire and the power of the club, which is a big one. That all comes together and it was a great moment when we became champions.”

Marcus Rashford Receives Special Award

After a happy Sunday for Marcus Rashford and a 6-2 win over Leeds United at Old Trafford, his day got even better as he picked up the 2020 Expert Panel Award for his work campaigning for free school meals for children during the global pandemic. Rashford’s campaign has led to two Government U-turns and his status not just in football but in campaigning against poverty also earned him an MBE in 2020.

Jordan Henderson Claims Second in BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2020

A great night for Liverpool was capped when Jordan Henderson claimed second place in the main BBC Sports Personality of the Year vote as Formula One’s Lewis Hamilton took the main prize. Henderson is a hard-working and influential captain for Liverpool and doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves but that changed with this deserved second place.

Overall it was a great night for Liverpool and football in general at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in a year that has been like no other.
