Grimsby Town Announce Filipe Morais Capture
Former Chelsea Academy Player Signs for Mariners
35-year-old winger Filipe Morais has joined Grimsby Town as a free agent and will bring experience to the League Two side. Morais started his football career at Premier League Chelsea, joining their Academy at just 16 years of age. He struggled to make it into the first team and joined Millwall in 2006 after completing a short loan at Milton Keynes Dons.
To Scotland and Back Again
Filipe Morais’ stay at Millwall came to an end as he headed north of the border signing for Hibernian in 2007. The player had two seasons with Hibs before moving onto Inverness and then St Johnstone.
2010 saw Morais move back South joining Oldham Athletic in 2010. In 2017 he moved to Bolton Wanderers and was part of the team that won promotion back to the Championship. Now he will team up with former Bradford City teammate James Hanson at Grimsby Town.
Plenty to Offer
Speaking to the official Grimsby Town website, Morais said he still has plenty to offer. He said: “Although I’m 35, I feel I’ve still got a lot to offer and I feel really good, so I can’t wait to get straight into it.”
Morais is also looking forward to working with Grimsby manager Ian Holloway. “I’m delighted really, I am really excited to work under the manager”, added Morais. “He’s had an amazing career, I just want to learn from him, you can never stop learning.”
Morais is fit and available to go into the squad for the home game against Mansfield Town on Saturday, December 12 and Holloway believes the much-travelled winger can add experience to his squad as well as being able to play in several positions: “I’m delighted that he lives so close to us, he’s just what we need at the moment, another senior head, as fit as a flea and he’s ready to go,” said the Grimsby boss.
“He only came in a couple of days ago and he’s been absolutely outstanding. He can play anywhere across the midfield, but he can also play left wing-back, right wing-back, centre mid or even off the striker.”
