Contract Extension for John McGinn
Midfielder Commits Future to Aston Villa
John McGinn joined Aston Villa from Scottish club Hibernian in the summer transfer window of 2018 and has gone on to become a fan favourite. In his first season at the club, he won Fans’ Player of the Season as well as being named Players’ Player of the Season. The Scot only signed a new contract extension as recently as August 2019 and this latest extension will keep him at the club until 2025.
Promotion
The Scotland international was a vital part of the Villa team that were promoted to the Premier League scoring the winner in the Championship play-off final, as well as scoring an incredible volley against Sheffield Wednesday that was nominated for various goal of the season awards.
After signing his new deal, Aston Villa CEO Christian Purslow said: “We are delighted to secure John’s services for the long term at Aston Villa. He is the type of player that Dean Smith and our ownership group want to build our club around: young, determined, athletic, technically gifted and passionate about winning.”
Value
McGinn has proved to be good value for money having joined for only £2.75 million. He is now ready to make sure Aston Villa avoid the trauma of last season’s relegation fight and told the clubs’ website that he is ‘over the moon’ with the new contract.
“It was an easy choice,” said McGinn. “I have a good relationship with everyone here and we had been talking for a while now.
“It was an important conversation, just one that been parked with the amount of games we had. But with the Newcastle game getting postponed earlier this month, it was the perfect time to get it agreed and I’m over the moon.“
Following this contract extension for John McGinn, Aston Villa are now looking to tie down McGinn’s teammate, Douglas Luiz to a new contract with talks ongoing.
