Cavani Instagram Post to Be Investigated by FA

Social Post Included Racially Offensive Term

The FA are set to look into an Instagram post by Manchester United‘s Edinson Cavani after the forward shared a story using a racially offensive term.

The former Paris Saint-Germain striker deleted the post shortly after he was made aware of how the wording could be interpreted.

The post, which was later deleted, included the words “gracias negrito”.

Cavani scored twice as Manchester United came from 2-0 down to beat Southampton on Sunday at St Mary’s Stadium.

The 33-year-old substitute grabbed the winner for the Red Devils in stoppage time.

A report by Sky Sports claims United “stressed that the word was clearly used in an affectionate manner and has different connotations in South America, where Cavani is from.”

The FA have not yet commented over what action they will take; however, reports suggest they will launch an investigation into Cavani’s use of social media.

Both Sky Sports and BBC Sport say the governing body are soon to look into the post, while The Guardian go as far as stating Cavani could face a three-game ban for the Instagram post.

Speaking on talkSPORT this morning, Watford striker Troy Deeney added his opinion on the social media post.

He said: “When you write a message out, it’s considered. Nine times out of 10, you’ll proof-read it before putting it out there because you don’t want to make yourself look an idiot.

“At no point in the psychological did you go ‘that’s not right’ – that’s what worries me a little bit.

“I understand that we get three-game bans now but I just want to know whether the FA are educating players when they come to this country.

“I don’t think he’s meant it to insult anyone, but educate what’s acceptable and what isn’t.”

FA Rule E3 governs the general behaviour of players and club officials, stating they “shall at all times act in the best interests of the game and shall not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour.”
