Union Berlin, the surprise package in the Bundesliga this season, have continued their impressive league form with a 2-1 win away at Köln.
Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi gave Union the lead but Ellyes Skhiri levelled for the struggling hosts. But Max Kruse netted his fourth Bundesliga goal of the season from the spot to earn Die Eisernen a fourth win of the new campaign.
Union Berlin Win at Köln to Continue Good Form
Fifth in the Bundesliga Table Following Third Straight Win
With their game not taking place until Sunday evening, Union had dropped from fifth in the table. However, the victory has lifted Urs Fischer’s side back into fifth, just four points behind the league leaders Bayern Munich.
Awoniyi, who replaced the injured Joel Pohjanpalo in the starting lineup, netted his first Union goal since his summer arrival midway through the first half.
Although Köln levelled, the Bundesliga strugglers were up against it for much of the match. However, the visitors had to be patient and wait until 20 minutes before time when Kruse successfully converted his 16 consecutive Bundesliga penalty to ensure Union returned to the capital with another three points.
Upcoming Fixtures for Union Berlin
Three successive league victories have given Union belief that they can kick on this season in just their second-ever top-flight campaign. If they win next weekend against an Eintracht Frankfurt side that have drawn their last three games, it will be a record number of successive Bundesliga wins for the capital club. It would also extend the clubs unbeaten run in the league to eight games.
Union then travel across the city to face rivals Hertha at the Olympiastadion with Die Alte Dame currently eight points behind their city rivals. They then welcome the current champions Bayern to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in what is a repeat fixture of the first game back after the initial lockdown.
