Antonio Conte insists that playmaker Christian Eriksen has had “many opportunities” to impress at the San Siro. The Inter Milan manager also warns that he will not alter his side’s formation to accommodate the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.
Eriksen has struggled for minutes ever since moving to Serie A in January and voiced his frustrations in October while on international duty with Denmark.
Antonio Conte Says Christian Eriksen Has Had Chances to Impress For Inter Milan
Eriksen ‘Expects to Play’ More Often For His Side
28-year-old Eriksen swapped North London for Milan towards the end of the January transfer window but has not experienced the sort of success he would have hoped for in the ten months since.
Whilst the attacking midfielder accepts that he must win over his manager if he is to start more matches for his club, Eriksen told the media last month that he does not want to “sit on the bench for the whole season”, and that he “expects to play.”
Frustrated with his status as a frequent substitute in Italy, Eriksen, who has been capped 103 times for his country, added that “one tends to be less patient as his experience grows.”
The player only started eight league matches in the second half of the 2019/20 season. So far in this campaign, Eriksen has made the starting eleven only three times in Serie A.
Former Chelsea Boss Conte Will Not Alter His System to Suit the Denmark International
Antonio Conte is known to prefer a 3-5-2 formation, which seemingly leaves little space in his team for the former Spurs favourite. The Inter manager reportedly feels ‘disappointed’ with the player’s contribution, and will not change his system to afford him greater game time.
La Gazzetta Dello Sport is reporting that there is a lack of understanding between player and manager, while the Daily Mail claim that Conte will look to offload the midfielder to French champions, Paris Saint-Germain.
Meanwhile, Goal are reporting that Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta has opened the door for Eriksen to leave the club this coming January, just twelve months after his arrival.
Marotta is reported as saying that he will not “hold a player back if they ask to be transferred”, meaning Eriksen will be granted a transfer elsewhere, should he ask for one.
“Conte is using [Eriksen] with respect for the player and the club. At the moment no offers have arrived, but at the appropriate time we will try to make the right decisions,” added Marotta.
