Ray Clemence has died at the age of 72 after fighting a long illness. The former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur l family goalkeeper’s family said that ‘he is in no more pain.’

Family Statement
The family of Ray Clemence released a message on the official Tottenham Hotspur website stating that he had lost his long fight with illness and is now at peace.
It read: “After fighting so hard, for such a long time, he’s now at peace and in no more pain. The family would like to say a huge thank you for the love and support he’s received over the years. He was loved so much by us all and will never be forgotten.”
Clemence was a successful goalkeeper throughout his career, winning three European Cups and five First Division titles with Liverpool. Bill Shankly had brought Clemence to Merseyside from Scunthorpe for £18,000. To add to his trophies, he also won an FA Cup, two UEFA Cups and the League Cup. Ray Clemence remains a legend at Liverpool.
In 1981, Clemence joined Tottenham Hotspur and in his first season won the FA Cup. During his time with the club, Clemence won yet another UEFA Cup. He nearly added another FA Cup winners medal only to lose in 1987 to Coventry City.
Ray Clemence: England Legend
Ray Clemence won 61 caps for England, and it is thought he would have won many more had it not been for Peter Shilton arriving on the scene. Clemence was a genial and always gracious man and remains an England legend.
England players will wear black armbands in their game against Belgium on Sunday 15th November as well as on Wednesday night at Wembley Stadium against Iceland.
Liverpool FC released a tweet about their former player, saying: “We’re deeply saddened by the passing of one of the greatest-ever goalkeepers.”

Ray Clemence leaves behind his wife Veronica, son Stephen and two daughters, Sarah and Julie.
