After making controversial remarks to several MPs on Tuesday, Greg Clarke has officially stepped down from his role as chairman of the Football Association.
Speaking before a Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport committee at Parliament, Clarke had used the word “coloured” among other controversial statements, and he issued a public apology for his actions. However, the FA confirmed he has now resigned.
Greg Clarke Resigns From Role as FA Chairman
Clarke Issues Official Statement
In his letter of resignation, Clarke once again states his regret for his offensive rhetoric and takes responsibility for his actions.
“My unacceptable words in front of Parliament were a disservice to our game and to those who watch, play, referee and administer it,” Clarke said in his statement. “This has crystallised my resolve to move on.”
“I am deeply saddened that I have offended those diverse communities in football that I and others worked so hard to include.”
Clarke has served the FA chairman since 2016, and his reign was significantly challenged by the implications of the Coronavirus pandemic, but his comments on Tuesday were the final nail in the coffin.
“I would like to thank my friends and colleagues in the game for the wisdom and counsel they have shared over the years and resign from the FA with immediate effect.”
No Permanent Replacement at the Time
In the wake of Clarke’s resignation, the FA has announced that Peter McCormick will be the interim chairman. McCormick has experience as chairman of the Premier League, and also was Vice Chairman of the FA in the past.
Currently, he serves as a Professional Game representative in the FA board, and sits on many executive committees within English football. He will be tasked with attempting to limit the damage caused by his predecessor, as well as reaffirm the FA’s commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in the game.
As part of their statement, the FA said: “We would also like to reaffirm that as an organisation, we are absolutely committed to doing everything we can to promote diversity, address inequality, and tackle all forms of discrimination in the game.”
