The England camp previously confirmed the withdrawal of Kieran Trippier from the squad, for personal reasons. Now reports from The Athletic has stated that the Atletico Madrid full-back left the England camp to appear at a personal hearing about his FA charge over breaching betting rules.
Trippier Leaves England Camp to Attend Betting Charge Hearing
When Did FA Charge Kieran Trippier?
The Football Association charged Kieran Trippier last year following his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Atletico Madrid. The full-back left England for the first time after making his professional debut to join Atletico Madrid last summer. The England international has always maintained his innocence and had earlier released a statement regarding the charges.
“I have fully complied with the FA’s investigation over the past several months on a voluntary basis and will continue to do so.I want to make it clear that while a professional footballer, I have at no stage placed any football related bets or received any financial benefit from others betting.”
The Athletic have alleged that Trippier’s friends had placed wagers after conversations on WhatsApp.
What Would Happen if He Is Found Guilty?
Kieran Trippier was officially charged by the FA specifically in relation to Rule E8(1)(a)(ii) and Rule E8(1)(b), during the period of July 2019.
Rule E8(1)(a): a participant shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on – (i) the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in or in connection with, a football match or competition; or (ii) any other matter concerning or related to football anywhere in the world, including, for example and without limitation, the transfer of players, employment of managers, team selection or disciplinary matters.
Rule E8(1)(b): where a participant provides to any other person any information relating to football which the participant has obtained by virtue of his or her position within the game and which is not publicly available at that time, the participant shall be in breach of this Rule where any of that information is used by that other person for, or in relation to, betting.
This means that, if proven guilty, Trippier could face six months ban from football. A similar charge against Daniel Sturridge saw the former Liverpool forward sentenced to a four-month ban earlier in the year. The FA charged the striker after reportedly leaking information about his potential move from Liverpool to Sevilla.
Bukayo Saka Likely to Replace Kieran Trippier in the Line-up
Kieran Trippier played the full 90 minutes for England in their win over Belgium in the UEFA Nations League match. The unavailability of Trippier and Chilwell has left the door open for Bukayo Saka.
Saka has been excellent for Arsenal since the start of the new Premier League season. The versatile midfielder has made five appearances for the Gunners already. He also made his England debut last week against Wales during their 3-0 win over their neighbours. If Southgate decides against tinkering with his system, Saka will get his first start in the Nations League against Denmark.
