After spending last season on loan at Roma, Chris Smalling has made the permanent switch from Manchester United for a fee of €15 million. Smalling will be looking to pick up where he left off last season.
Following a fifth-place finish last season, too, Smalling, alongside the Roma team as a whole, will be desperate to improve and once again reach the top four. For now, however, they’ll have to settle for the Europa League, a competition they’ll undoubtedly be among the favourites to win.

A Deal That Suits Both Parties
For Manchester United, the aim is to raise money fund squad improvements. For Chris Smalling, it was to make a permanent move to Italy.
So, here we are, with both parties getting what they wanted. Smalling has made the switch to Italy and, in doing so, given Manchester United some much-needed funds for potential transfers.
The task for United will now be to spend that money wisely before the window slams shut. Should they do that, a top-four place will undoubtedly be on the cards for a second season running.
A Good Move for Smalling
Before joining Roma on loan last season, Chris Smalling looked stuck for choices; he looked destined to sit on the bench at United. A year later, however, and he is respected more than ever in Italy and is popular within the Roma fans. It comes as no surprise to see the Englishman make the permanent move after impressing so much while on loan.
He had his good times at Manchester United, yes, winning two Premier League titles along the way, but it was time to move on for the betterment of his career.
