Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has signed a contract extension until 2024 with the club. The England international joined Villa on loan from Bournemouth in January 2019 and was part of the squad that helped the Villains gain promotion back to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. He was then key in Villa’s survival last season, secured with a 1-1 draw at West Ham United, and is set to be an integral part of their campaign in 2020/21.

A Stellar Year for Mings
After failing to really make the grade at Bournemouth (largely down to long-term injury issues), Mings’ career has really taken a step up since his move to Villa and reached the levels that were expected when he was starring at Ipswich Town as a youngster.
He made 18 appearances and scored twice in his loan spell with the club as Villa secured promotion back to the Premier League.
Soon after, at the start of the 2019/20 season, Mings received his first call-up to the England national team for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo.
His debut for Gareth Southgate’s side came in the first game against Bulgaria, which ended in a 6-0 win for the Three Lions.
The contract extension as well as the change of shirt number to number five signals that Mings is seen as a key member of the squad at Villa Park as they look to re-establish themselves in the top flight.
Their transfer business over the summer has been impressive and if Mings can continue his form from last season, and if the new signings can match those levels, then Villa will likely be comfortable in their pursuit of survival.
