Kevin De Bruyne Not Upset Lionel Messi is Staying at Barcelona

Kevin De Bruyne has said he ‘really does not care’ that Manchester City missed out on signing Lionel Messi in this summer’s transfer window.

The Argentinian great had appeared set to leave Barcelona this summer. However, both the club and La Liga blocked any free transfer away for the 33-year-old. As such, Messi reluctantly decided to stay in Catalonia, at least for one more season.

Belgian Midfielder Describes Messi as the Best Player of All Time

Manchester City were billed as the favourites to sign Messi this summer. The club’s financial clout, coupled with the presence of former Barça manager Pep Guardiola, had seemingly made an eye-catching transfer possible.

Messi, however, was unwilling to fight his way out of Barcelona and enter into a legal battle with the club. His U-turn extinguished any chances of a move to the Premier League, but De Bruyne is unperturbed by those developments.

Asked whether he is upset to miss out on the chance of playing with Messi, the Belgian was open in his response.

“I really don’t care. I really don’t,” said the 29-year-old to the Daily Mail.

“If he would have come, it would have helped us, because for me, he has been the best player of all time. But I am never looking at what players may come and what may happen.

“You play with the players you have and I think we have a pretty good team in that respect. It would be stupid of me to assume what would happen if a certain player came. It happens in football all the time. People are supposed to come and eventually they don’t.”

De Bruyne and the rest of his City team-mates begin their Premier League season away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on 21 September.
