After spending a year at Inter Milan, Diego Godin is reportedly set to depart the Italian giants with talks with Cagliari at an advanced stage, according to Fabrizio Romano. The agreement is reportedly yet to be reached between the two clubs and on personal terms, but the talks are ongoing.
The 34-year-old, after a career on Europe’s biggest of stages, looks set to finish his playing days at the slightly smaller club of Cagliari.
Diego Godin in Advanced Talks with Cagliari
Too Soon for a Step Down in Quality?
Cagliari finished a mediocre 14th place lasts season while Diego Godin hit the heights, and inevitable heartbreak, of the Serie A title race and Europa League final.
Throughout the entire season, the former Atletico Madrid man did not look out of place; he looked more than capable of performing to the highest of levels despite his age. His reported move to Cagliari seems a strange one when you think about his remaining quality.
Thiago Silva is one year older than Godin, yet is about to play in the Premier League for the first time in his career with Chelsea. Godin is still capable enough to make a similar move and to keep his dream alive of winning in Europe once again.
Perhaps the often dominant centre-back feels it’s time for a new challenge and the chance to become a hero at a smaller club. A move to Cagliari would provide him with that chance to see out his career in a slightly more quiet manner.
Chance for Cagliari to Seal One of the Deals of the Summer?
As a mid-table side, the chance to get one of Europe’s best defenders is a rarity for Cagliari. Yet, here they are reportedly in advanced talks with Diego Godin. Should they pull the deal off, it will be one of the best in the summer window and could see Cagliari rise to the top half of the Serie A this season.
