Ajax are working on a deal to bring Luis Suarez back to Amsterdam, according to the club’s sporting director Marc Overmars.
The news is being reported by Fabrizio Romano after Uruguayan striker Suarez was not named among the seven stars seen as crucial to Barcelona’s rebuild.
Ajax Looking to Structure Luis Suarez Deal
‘We’re Trying But It’s Difficult’, Says Overmars
Suarez spent four years at Ajax prior to signing for Liverpool in 2011. During that time, the 33-year-old scored 111 goals in 159 games for the Dutch giants.
Such a goal-scoring record has not been forgotten by the club, who would like to re-sign the player now he has been deemed disposable by Barcelona.
Overmars, however, is under no illusion as to the difficulty of arranging any deal. Suarez remains under contract at Barcelona until June 2021 and is among the Catalan club’s highest earners.
“The chances of Luis Suarez joining us are quite small. We’re trying but it’s difficult,” said the Ajax sporting director.
Lionel Messi to Follow Suarez Away From Barcelona?
News has also broken that Argentine great Lionel Messi is angling for a move out of the La Liga outfit.
Messi believes he can exercise an option to break from his contract for nothing this summer. His club, however, are expected to remain steadfast that he will go nowhere unless his €700 million release clause is met.
Though club bosses at the Nou Camp are willing to sanction the departure of his strike-partner Suarez, they are desperate to keep hold of Messi.
New manager Ronald Koeman has said he does not know if Messi will need convincing to stay in Catalonia.
Messi is Barcelona’s all-time record goal-scorer. Suarez sits third on that list, having notched 198 goals in 283 games for the club.
The Uruguayan forward mustered 16 goals in La Liga last season, with the 2019/20 campaign looking like it may be his last with the club.
