After helping Aston Villa to safety last season, Pepe Reina has reportedly agreed a deal with Lazio. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Spaniard has signed a two-year contract, joining from AC Milan in search of one final hurrah in the Champions League.
REPORT: Reina Deal Set to Be Announced
One Final Hurrah?
At the age of 37, it’s fair to say that Pepe Reina isn’t exactly in his prime. By joining Lazio, however, he has the chance for one final hurrah; one last successful stint in between the posts in Italy. The former Villa man may not come in as the first choice, but, when opportunities arise, he’ll be keen to roll back the years and perform to his very best.
Playing for a side of Lazio’s newfound calibre, too, could see Reina take away a Serie A medal as a souvenir upon retirement. Instead of the stress of a relegation battle, the Spaniard will have a far more enjoyable ride of the title race.
The Chance to Teach Others
With a plethora of experience under his belt, Pepe Reina now has the chance to play the role of teacher at Lazio. The former Milan man can use his knowledge to guide the likes of Thomas Strakosha into a world-class keeper.
The fact is, Reina comes into this Lazio move with nothing to lose, but everything to gain. The chance for medals is there; the chance for memorable victories is there; most importantly, the opportunity for Reina to bow out with pride is there. The move to Lazio, if reports are to be believed, should be the most suitable way to see out Reina’s career.
Reina proved his capabilities at Villa, too. Even at 37, the Spaniard made crucial saves to deny the opposition, and help keep Villa afloat in the process. Lazio will have themselves a solid second choice in Pepe Reina.
