Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle is likely to see out his contract on Tyneside, according to Mike McGrath, of The Telegraph. The 30-year-old had reportedly been a target for several Premier League and Championship clubs.
Dwight Gayle Set for Newcastle United Stay
A Season of Ups And Downs for Gayle
Dwight Gayle had a forgettable start to the 2019/20 season. The striker missed the first eight matches with calf issues. On his return, the 30-year-old struggled in front of goal. In fact, Gayle failed to find the net in any of the matches he played before the lockdown.
Post lockdown, Gayle was a different player altogether. The 30-year old scored four goals in eight matches and finished as Newcastle’s second-highest goalscorer in the league.
Eyeing Contract Extension
Gayle joined Newcastle United in 2016 and was a key figure in helping The Magpies get back into the Premier League. Since the transition, the 30-year old has failed to replicate his Championship goalscoring form in the top-flight.
The striker has managed just ten goals in 55 Premier League appearances for Newcastle. But, he showed his goalscoring prowess while on loan at West Brom in 2018/19, scoring 23 goals for The Baggies.
He is now into his fifth year at St. James’ Park. With less than a year remaining in his contract, the striker will be hoping to continue his goalscoring touch into the new season and earn a contract extension.
Misfiring strikers
One of the major problems for Newcastle last season had been their misfiring strikers. The trio of Andy Carroll, Yoshinori Muto, Joelinton, and Dwight Gayle have scored a combined total of just eight goals across all competitions in 2019/20. With Gayle looking to stay at St. James’ Park this season, they will have to sell one of their strikers to make room for a new one.
