Ever since Chelsea completed the signing of Timo Werner, Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz has been tipped to be next on the list for the Blues and manager Frank Lampard. So far, nothing has materialised, but now a move could be right around the corner, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Chelsea to Work Out Kai Havertz Agreement Soon
Season Over for Havertz
Apart from the dispute on the transfer fee, an important part of the deal was whether or not Havertz would play the remainder of the Europa League with Leverkusen.
Whereas Werner decided to skip the Champions League with Leipzig in order to settle in at Stamford Bridge, the German club were adamant he would at least finish the season with his team.
After reaching the quarter-finals with a win over Rangers, they were eliminated by Inter Milan on Monday, putting an end to their season. Havertz did get a goal, but it was not enough as the Italians put two past them to advance to the semi-finals.
Now that the Europa League has been sorted, Chelsea will make an official offer shortly. While the fee is yet to be agreed on, personal terms already have been and it seems to be only a matter of time before the chiefs can reach an agreement.
The Significance of Havertz to Chelsea
Havertz would be a very important addition to Lampard’s side, adding to an exciting attacking outfit that includes Christian Pulisic, Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Tammy Abraham.
This season, the young German has made significant contributions to his side, with 12 goals and six assists in the league alone. At the age of 21, he has a massive upside and is only getting better, so it would be a very shrewd acquisition for Chelsea.
The reported fee Leverkusen are demanding is £90 million, which is a ways off from Chelsea’s valuation of the youngster at around £70m. Regardless, Lampard is desperate to sign him, so at some point either the Blues will give in or Leverkusen will compromise on the fee, possibly settled through add-ons and instalments.
Whenever and however it happens, the overwhelming odds are that Havertz will sign for Chelsea, and now the official meetings and communications can begin.
