Tottenham Hotspur will be refreshing their backroom staff over the summer, with assistant coach Ricardo Formosinho leaving the club to pursue a head coach role elsewhere. It is reported by Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard and Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph that club legend Ledley King will be the replacement.

Mourinho Wanted a Local Replacement

Mourinho addressed the issue in a wide-ranging final press conference of the season on Friday. While speaking to the media, the Portuguese manager outlined his plans for a replacement.

“I’m not going to say where but we all wish him all the best. Who is coming to replace him? I prefer that it’s the club that’s going to inform you about that but I prefer to go in the direction of developing local people, instead of bringing somebody with me.

“So it’ll be someone with a history of the club, [a] connection with the club, so let’s try to give them the opportunity.”

It’s thought that King impressed Mourinho with his work on Spurs’ defensive players during lockdown. The 39-year-old has completed his coaching badges and has previously coached Spurs’ U18 side on a part-time basis.

Tottenham Going in the Right Direction

Mourinho also reiterated his belief in the current crop of players at his disposal, while also stating his desire to add greater balance to the group in the transfer market:

“I think we are going in the right direction. We are very calm and organised.

“So I think, step by step, we will end up with a better squad – a more balanced squad – than we have now. Of course keeping the great players that we have is a very important thing.”
