Recent reports are suggesting that League One rivals Sunderland and Portsmouth are being linked to experienced striker Adam Le Fondre. Both Jordan Cross of The Portsmouth News and Mark Donnelly of the Sunderland Echo report that Le Fondre could be heading to League One.
However, The Portsmouth News suggests that Pompey will have no interest in the former Reading striker paving the way for Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson to strengthen his forward line. The Black Cats manager is keen to bolster his strike force having allowed Kyle Lafferty to leave and other strikers being shot-shy last term.
Adam Le Fondre Linked with English Return
Currently Down Under With Sydney FC
The 33-year-old English striker, who has previously had successful spells at Rochdale, Rotherham United and Reading, left for Australia following time at Bolton Wanderers. His time with Sydney has been prolific, scoring 41 goals in 60 games. This season he has netted 18 times in 21 games to help Sydney to the top of the table. Should he return to England in this kind of form, he would be an asset for any team; however, there is quite a difference between League One and the A-League.
Sunderland Maybe Head of the Queue
Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett is unlikely to pursue a deal for Le Fondre. This is mainly due to the Pompey boss favouring younger players who may have a resale value. This could, therefore, pave the way for Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson to make a move should he have any real interest.
Sunderland struggled for goals from their strikers last season with both Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke struggling. Kyle Lafferty signed in January but he was allowed to leave after scoring just twice. An experienced forward such as Le Fondre could be the way Parkinson will go in the transfer market as he attempts to get Sunderland back to the Championship.
The Black Cats have suffered their two lowest ever league finishes since dropping into League One. Fans would now like to see some signs that the club can now get back to where they believe they belong.
