REPORT: Chris Hughton in Discussions With Bristol City Over Manager Job

Successful CV

Chris Hughton is in discussions with Bristol City with a view to become the Robins’ new manager, according to Sky Sports.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion boss has a proven track record of achieving promotion from the Championship.

The 61-year-old has previously taken the Seagulls and Newcastle United to the Premier League.

He has, however, been unemployed since May 2019 when he was sacked as Brighton finished just two points above the drop zone.

Sky Sports claim he has turned down five jobs in the Championship, but Ashton Gate could be his future home.

Experienced Managers Linked With Vacant Role

Hughton becomes the second experienced manager to be linked with the role, following the footsteps of Mick McCarthy.

The 61-year-old has been out of work since leaving his managerial role with the Republic of Ireland in April.

McCarthy has a wealth of experience at the Championship level.

He has previously managed a host of Championship clubs as well as taking charge of his home country during two separate spells.

He left his last role in club management, at Ipswich Town, in 2018, where they pushed for the playoffs on multiple occasions during his six-year tenure.

However, his most successful managerial stints came prior to that with Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

McCarthy secured promotion to the Premier League with both clubs and this winning mentality may prove attractive for the Robins.

Search for a New Boss

Bristol City are searching for a new manager after Lee Johnson was sacked by the Robins at the weekend.

A 1-0 defeat in the Severnside derby to Cardiff City proved the end of the line for Johnson, whose job was relinquished just hours after the loss.

The Robins parted ways with Johnson after losing all four games since the Championship restarted last month.

It leaves the Robins nine points adrift of the play-offs with five matches to go.
