Former Sunderland captain, and now free agent, Lee Cattermole, is wanted back at the club by many of their fans. Cattermole spent ten years at the Stadium of Light before moving to Holland last summer with VVV Venlo. The Eredivisie side, however, have decided not to extend his contract.
The recent coronavirus pandemic has forced some clubs to release players due to the financial pressures associated with the game being suspended. Cattermole had a one year contract but the Dutch club have released the experienced midfielder.
VVV Venlo Release Lee Cattermole and He’s Wanted Back at Sunderland
Fan Favourite
32-year-old Cattermole was a fan favourite at Sunderland during his time at the club. Always a player to give 100% and known to play through injuries in an attempt to help the side fight numerous battles, fans would now like to see his return.
Sunderland could be set to spend another year in League One and the return of the aggressive midfielder could be a huge boost. The former captain has been a big miss on and off the pitch since his departure from the club and his leadership skills could make the difference as the club continue to fight for a return to the Championship.
Fans Want to See Him Return
Upon the news of Cattermole’s release, fans took to social media to express their desire to see him return to the club. Local newspaper, the Sunderland Echo, asked supporters their thoughts about a possible return. The vast majority were in favour with some wanting him to be given a role on the coaching staff as well as a place in the team.
Cattermole is keen to remain positive and has hopes of finding a new club: “I signed a one-year contract which came about very late with me leaving Sunderland in July. I initially wanted it to be a one-year thing but I think the next two or three months are going to be a bit crazy for everyone. I’ve got to keep fit and positive and hopefully, an opportunity comes up which I want to do, whether that’s here [UK] or there.”
Wages Could be an Issue
Prior to leaving the club, Cattermole was earning a reported £40,000 per week. Due to the club failing to secure promotion at the first attempt, the release of the midfielder, while disappointing, was financially sensible. League rules state that a club cannot exceed 60% of their turnover on wages. As the top earner, Cattermole’s departure was inevitable.
However, one year on and although the rules are the same, Cattermole could be willing to return to Sunderland if they want him back and if a deal is right for both player and club. Fans would certainly like to see his passion back on the pitch at the Stadium of Light and possibly as part of the coaching team too. However, in these uncertain times, there is no telling what could happen, when it could happen or even if it could happen at all.
