Coronavirus: Government Gives Green Light for Football Restart by June 1

Project Restart to See Football Return

Boris Johnson gave an update to the nation last night in a televised address but did not mention a potential date of return for football.

The Government has announced plans to allow football to restart as they begin to relax restrictions.

Football could return as early as June 1 but supporters will not be in attendance until “significantly later.”

There is no timeframe as to when football fans will be allowed to return to stadiums.

The Government could also choose to delay the restart of football beyond June 1 should the rate of infection with coronavirus increase.

Boris Johnson’s 50-page road map for exiting the lockdown was published earlier this afternoon (Monday 11 May).

It sets out the conditions under which various activities can be safely carried out.

The return of football is included within stage two of the program.

Specifically, it includes: “permitting cultural and sporting events to take place behind closed-doors for broadcast, while avoiding the risk of large-scale social contact.”

The Premier League have been discussing ‘Project Restart’ as they look to come up with a specific manner of how to get the season finalised.

The decisions are yet to be finalised with neutral venues and no relegation having been options discussed.

Boost for Leeds United and West Brom

The news will come as a huge boost for Leeds United and West Brom.

Both clubs have been stand-out performers in the Championship and currently occupy the two automatic promotion spots.

Concerns were raised with the thought of no relegation from the top-flight hindering their potential returns to the Premier League.
