REPORT: Chelsea Open Talks With Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell

Ever since the form of Marcos Alonso took a dramatic dip, Chelsea have been in need of a left-back with their defensive deficiencies clear down the left-hand side. The Blues have been previously linked with several players that could fix this problem, only to miss out on targets such as Alex Telles and therefore once again be stuck with a recurring full-back problem.

As reported by both Ben Pringle of The Express and Leicestershire Live, however, Chelsea have opened talks with Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, who has enjoyed yet another solid season at the Foxes. Chilwell would undoubtedly fix the left-back problem at Chelsea with his defensive capabilities as well as his attacking exploits two exciting assets of his.

A Move That May Not Come Cheap

Amid the current Coronavirus crisis, many clubs will be considering their finances and judging just how much money they are willing to throw at transfer targets this summer. Chelsea, as well as almost every team in the Premier League, will be among those acting cautiously in the market. This could see a delay in several big-money moves for long-term targets at Stamford Bridge, including Ben Chilwell. The 23-year-old could cost Chelsea up to £50 million in the summer; a fee the Blues may be unwilling to match.

It is certainly something that Frank Lampard will need to consider in the summer as he looks to stamp his mark on the Chelsea squad ahead of next season.

Other Options to Ben Chilwell

With the price of the deal something that Chelsea will need to consider in the summer, they may look for cheaper and potentially better options in the summer. The Blues have reportedly also set their sights on Monaco’s Fode Ballo Toure. According to the Express, Chelsea will only be willing to make a move for the 23-year-old if either Marcos Alonso or Emerson Palmieri decide to depart. And, the fact is, the Monaco man will provide Chelsea with a cheaper option to that of Ben Chilwell and potentially, in the long term, a better one.

Either way, Chelsea’s left-back problem is one that needs to be fixed quickly and efficiently as they look to cement their place among the top four in England.
