With his contract set to expire in the summer, several clubs have been linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain right-back Thomas Meunier in what could be the bargain of the summer. Among those clubs reportedly interested in the Belgian defender is Tottenham Hotspur, with Jose Mourinho’s persuasive nature reportedly convincing Meunier to make a move to North London in the summer. Both L’Equipe, via Teamtalk, and Alisdair Gold of football.london have reported that a phone call from Jose Mourinho has ‘won over’ Meunier with a move in the summer now a real possibility.

Meunier Still Hoping For PSG Deal
Thomas Meunier, however, is still hoping for a new PSG deal before his current contract expires in France this summer, with a move to Spurs seen as more of a backup option. But, with the Belgian approaching 29-years-old, PSG will be keen to offload the full-back in search of a younger replacement as they plan for the future.
And, when considering the financial implications of the Coronavirus pandemic, PSG would simply be better off without Meunier on their increasingly high payroll. This leaves Meunier’s supposed backup option of a move to Spurs extremely likely as the Belgian seeks another big club move.
A Deal That Suits Both Parties
The deal itself looks perfect for both parties on paper, with Meunier getting the chance to remain at the top level, despite approaching his 30s, and Spurs getting an experienced full-back on a free deal, something Daniel Levy simply will not be able to turn down. When looking at the Spurs squad this season, it is clear that a full-back is needed with Serge Aurier often struggling on the defensive side of the position, making costly and clumsy errors. In truth, Meunier would act as the long-awaited Kieran Trippier replacement after over a year since the Englishman swapped London for Atletico Madrid.
The deal as a whole looks more and more likely by the day with PSG unwilling to offer Meunier a new contract and Jose Mourinho’s phone call reportedly winning over the Belgian defender.
