The 2019/19 Ajax team was nothing short of incredible with the likes of Frenkie De Jong and Matthijs De Ligt at the forefront of the Dutchmen’s unforgettable Champions League run. Since that famous run, however, both De Ligt and De Jong have moved on to Juventus and Barcelona respectively, leaving Ajax depleted, resulting in an early Champions League exit.
And now, just several months later, the Eredivisie champions could be set to lose their goalkeeper, Andre Onana.
REPORT: Ajax Name Their Price For Andre Onana
Interest High in Onana
According to the Telegraph, Ajax have set a £35 million price tag on Andre Onana with the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona reportedly interested in the Cameroon international. And with a price tag so cheap, we could well see Onana become the latest departure of many that once graced the famous pitch of the Johan Cruyff Arena.
A Move That Makes Sense For Chelsea
Since the record-breaking arrival of Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018, the battle for the number one spot at Chelsea has been ongoing with neither Kepa or Willy Caballero certain to start the next game. Kepa’s ability between the sticks, in particular, has been questioned this season by the Chelsea fans, who may feel as though the Spaniard hasn’t justified his record-breaking price tag in a Chelsea shirt.
This is a problem that Frank Lampard will want to fix in the summer with the Chelsea manager seemingly unable to rely on either Kepa or 38-year-old, Caballero, in the Chelsea goal.
This makes a move for Onana perfect for Chelsea this summer with the Ajax number one available for as cheap as £35 million despite being one of the most consistent goalkeepers around. The deal will certainly look cheap to Roman Abramovich, too, who had to shell out as much as £70 million when last looking for a new number one.
And with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen far from ready to give up his number one spot at Barcelona, Onana may feel as though a move to Chelsea and the Premier League is the best next step in what could be a legendary career.
