As football has been brought to an indefinite halt, Last Word On Football has taken a look at the West Bromwich Albion players that are out of contract this summer.
The West Bromwich Albion Players out of Contract
Who Remains May Depend on Promotion
Excluding loan players, there are ten players out of contract at The Hawthorns this summer. Who remains may depend on whether the club can seal promotion to the Premier League.
The Baggies are currently second in the Championship, just one point behind league leaders Leeds United. However, perhaps more importantly, they are six points ahead of Fulham in third place.
As a result, Slaven Bilic may look to add more quality to his side should they return to the top-flight.
One player who is out of contract and is anticipated to leave is Nathan Ferguson. The 19-year-old is attracting interest from Crystal Palace, and they are set to approach the out of contract youngster in the summer.
Chris Brunt
The 35-year-old is likely to depart this summer after a magnificent 13-year spell in the Midlands.
Brunt has made just a handful of appearances for Slaven Bilic’s side this season, with the Croatian favouring youth over experience.
However, the Northern Ireland international has been a consistent and much-loved figure in the dressing room at The Hawthorns. It would be a fitting way to part with the club if they were to return to the top-flight.
Gareth Barry
Having returned to the club on a short-term deal in November 2019, The 39-year-old is also likely to be released.
Barry was initially released at the end of last season. However, the Baggies were short on options in midfield and asked if he would be open to return to the club as cover. Despite making just six appearances so far this season, he has been useful when called upon.
Should he be released, Barry may decide to retire after more than 20 years in the game.
Ali Al-Habsi
Another of West Brom’s experienced professional.
The former Wigan Athletic goalkeeper joined the Baggies on a free transfer last summer as a third choice ‘keeper.
His status at the club may depend on the future of fellow back-up goalkeeper Jonathan Bond, who is also out of contract.
Jonathan Bond
Bond, like Al-Habsi, is back-up to undisputed first-choice goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
Since his arrival, the 26-year-old has featured just seven times, conceding eight goals.
If Albion were to seal promotion, then he may want to fight it out with Johnstone to be the first-choice at The Hawthorns. However, he may also look to earn that opportunity elsewhere.
Alex Palmer
The youngest of the three goalkeepers at 23, Palmer could see his stay at The Hawthorns extended.
Although he is yet to make his senior debut for the Baggies, the academy product has impressed while on loan with Plymouth Argyle this season. He has made 40 appearance for the League Two side this season, keeping 15 clean sheets.
While he may earn a contract extension, it may be that he is sent out on loan again to gain more experience higher up the divisions.
Kyle Edwards
According to Birmingham Live, the Baggies have the option to offer Edwards a one-year contract extension.
The 22-year-old is on the fringes of Slaven Bilic’s first 11, having made the majority of his appearances from the bench so far this season.
It is a deal that has been under consideration for some time, as The Athletic reported in January that talks were well underway.
Lee Peltier
Peltier joined as cover on a short-term deal in January. He is yet to make an appearance under Bilic.
However, as his status with the club will be reviewed over the coming weeks, his Premier League experience may sway the decision to keep him in his favour. The 33-year-old made 25 appearances for Cardiff City last season as they were relegated after just one season.
Jack Fitzwater
The youngster is struggling to break into the first-team at The Hawthorns, and as a result, may look for a fresh start with a new club.
Fitzwater has just one appearances for the Baggies to his name, that coming earlier this season in the FA Cup Third Round.
After several loan spells away from the club, he may decide that he wants a permanent club where he can call himself first-choice.
Kane Wilson
The 20-year-old is currently out on loan at struggling League One club Tranmere Rovers, where he has made 16 appearances.
Wilson is certainly one for the future at The Hawthorns. While he may not be ready for the first-team yet, he is likely to be rewarded with a new contract to continue with the next stage of his development.
