How are Manchester United Players’ Past and Present Coping in Italy?

One of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s missions, when he took over as Manchester United manager, was to get rid of the deadwood in the squad. Prior to his start, Jose Mourinho left an ageing team but with some young talent, and Solskjaer had come in and sold many of the older players who have become surplus to requirements. While these players were not performing well with the Red Devils, one former Manchester United player and one currently on loan have enjoyed the switch to Italy.

Former Manchester United Players’ Success in Italy

Romelu Lukaku

United’s biggest summer sale, Romelu Lukaku, has taken Serie A by storm. The Belgian international has scored 17 times in 25 appearances for Inter Milan, bagging himself two assists as well. Playing alongside Lautaro Martinez, he has been one of Inter’s star players this season.

His transfer seems to have worked out well for all parties, with United getting money to fund other transfers, Lukaku getting a boost in form and the Black and Blues getting a great striker.

While the striker still struggles against the big teams, having failed to score against fellow title contenders Lazio and Juventus, he is still one of Inter Milan’s best players and has certainly succeeded in his move to Italy.

Chris Smalling

Since going on loan to AS Roma, Chris Smalling has greatly impressed. He has nailed down a position in their starting team, something he failed to do at United for the most part, and even has two goals and an assist. He has helped La Lupa to six clean sheets this season and has been an instrumental part of their defence.

The Englishman’s performances in Italy have attracted much interest from various clubs across Europe. While Roma would like to make his loan move permanent, Tottenham Hotspur are also interested. It is unclear what the future holds for Smalling, and with United having many established centre-backs, and looking into a move for Samuel Umtiti in the summer, it seems that Chris Smalling may not play for United next season.
