Chris Smalling is not likely to return to Manchester United after his loan spell at Roma. This is because United already have a host of solid centre-back options including Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. However, Smalling’s performances at Roma have attracted interest from multiple other Premier League sides. These include Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Everton.
Gazzetta dello Sport claims that the 30-year-old and Roma both want to make the move permanent. Smalling could still be forced to transfer if United’s asking price is too high. This is why clubs are still circling to sign him even though he might stay at Roma.
Chris Smalling Sought After by Multiple Premier League Sides
Tottenham Hotspur
Tuttosport report that Spurs are highly interested in Smalling. The London side have had horrible defensive problems so far this season which could be fixed with the addition of Smalling. Tuttosport say that Tottenham will try to sign the defender if Roma don’t reach an agreement with Manchester United over a permanent deal.
Arsenal
Arsenal are also ready to sign the Manchester United loanee. United have placed a £25million price tag on the former England international because of his impressive performances at AS Roma. But according to The Express, Arsenal believe this cost to be worth it in order to fix their defence
Mikel Arteta is rebuilding Arsenal after a horrible spell under Unai Emery. Under Emery, the backline became a huge problem area for the Gunners, and Arteta is faced with the task of fixing it. Because of these defensive issues, the Spaniard may be happy to overpay for defenders, as long as his problems are solved. In fact, £25 million would be a good value for Smalling at Arsenal if he continues his great run of form.
What Will Roma Do Without Chris Smalling?
AS Roma are reluctant to let Smalling go, but they are prepared if he has to leave. Roma are already considering a move for Marcos Rojo. The Argentinian is currently on loan at Estudiantes, but the deal does not have a purchase option, so he is still available to Roma.
