REPORT: Nemanja Matic Set to Sign New Manchester United Contract

Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic is set to extend his stay at Manchester United after reports emerged that he has signed a new deal. The 31-year old’s current deal expires in June but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has all but confirmed that he will be staying at Old Trafford.

Matic – Revitalised

Matic’s stay at Old Trafford looked set to come to an abrupt end when his form dipped and he was no longer in the side.  The Serb has now forced his way back into the side and is a mainstay of the midfield. The signing of Bruno Fernandes has really allowed Matic to flourish. He is able to sit in front of the back four. There, he sweeps up the midfield, then giving the ball to more attacking players. Matic has revitalised his form and would be a big miss in the midfield if he departed in the summer.

Matic’s way back in the team came when Scott McTominay suffered an injury. He was out for a couple of months, thus Matic filled in. Matic impressed so much during this time, that upon McTominay’s return, Solskjaer deployed a diamond midfield. In the Everton game, Matic played in front of the defence whilst McTominay played slightly more advanced. This allowed United to dominate the midfield battle. The reward for his return to form is this new deal.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer addressed Matic’s future when speaking to the press. He revealed the news that an agreement is in place. Solskjaer commented: “We have agreed with him so he will stay, 100 per cent.”

It is expected that Matic is signing a fresh two-year deal at Old Trafford. Manchester United held an option to trigger a one-year extension to the deal he currently has. This deal will be good news for Matic, who still has a chance of playing at Euro 2020. Serbia are in the playoff round and will play Norway in the semi-final of path C.
