Pep Guardiola has claimed that he could be given the sack by Manchester City if the club fails to progress in the UEFA Champions League. City have been drawn against Real Madrid in the last 16 of the competition.
Pep Guardiola Claims He Could Be Sacked
Will Manchester City Get Rid?
A manager who is as successful as Guardiola getting sacked seems ludicrous. He became the first manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to retain the Premier League. Guardiola has also won several domestic cups during his time in England and has reached the Carabao Cup final again.
However, it has long been thought that Manchester City’s owners crave the Champions League. It is also thought that this was a key motivation behind hiring the ex-Barcelona manager. Previous managers, such as Manuel Pellegrini and Roberto Mancini, have won the same trophies at Manchester City that Guardiola has. There is an argument then that he hasn’t quite met expectations at City, despite his high volume of success.
“We Give a Bad Message for the New Generation”
Guardiola suggested that he may be sacked if he doesn’t win the Champions League. However, he went on to argue that a trophyless season does not automatically mean that it is a bad one.
Manchester City won the previous two Premier League titles, though Liverpool are running away with it this season. It would seem short-sighted to sack a manager for not winning the title for three seasons in a row.
Liverpool are the perfect example of trophyless seasons not necessarily equating to bad ones. It took until last season’s Champions League win for Klopp to win silverware, though there were clear signs of progress before that. It is simply unsustainable for managers to continually be sacked for not winning the biggest prizes in football.
