Anfield Is To Be Expanded By 2022

Anfield

Liverpool are set to expand Anfield’s capacity, following the unveiling of new plans. £60m is going to be invested into the redevelopment of the Anfield Road stand, meaning the stadium will hold 61,000 people by the 2022-23 season.

Anfield To Be Expanded

Huge Expansion Plans At The Stadium

Liverpool are well underway with a public consultation over plans to expand Anfield. The club will submit a full planning permission application to Liverpool City Council and will hope to be given the green light to begin work.

If the plans are approved, construction will begin later this year. The building is set to be completed by summer 2022. Anfield Road is next in line after the Main Stand’s expansion. The plan is to add around 7000 seats to the stand, bringing Anfield’s total capacity up to 61,000. This would make Anfield one of the biggest stadiums in the Premier League, matching Liverpool’s stature.

Who Will Benefit?

Anfield regularly sells out and fans find it near impossible to get match-day tickets. This expansion is only good news for Liverpool fans hoping to see the Reds play more regularly.

It also brings some good news for those on the season ticket waiting list. The club’s waiting list has been closed since 2011, as there were 23,000 people already on it. It is likely that some of the seats will be given to these people, though it has not been confirmed how many.

Approximately 5400 seats will be general admission, whilst the remainder will be the more expensive hospitality seats. A railway station dedicated to Anfield has been discussed in the past, though has been discounted. However, the possibility of re-opening a Merseyrail station near the stadium has been discussed. It has also been decided that it was unrealistic to expand the stand by any more than 7000 seats.
