The former Lincoln City boss walked into the press conference room with his eyes fixed upon his phone.

Before the conference began, he warned the awaiting the journalists that he would be keeping close tabs on one of his former club’s results.

Non-League side Concord Rangers, who Cowley managed in the earlier part of his managerial career, were taking part in a penalty shoot-out in the FA Trophy as the Terriers boss was due to speak to the press.

The Beachboys were looking to make their own history by beating Leamington to reach the last eight of the FA Trophy.

Lamar Reynolds put the Essex side ahead before Stephen Morley’s leveller. Junior English was dismissed for the visitors and Cowley’s former side looked to take advantage as James Blanchfield scored in extra-time.

But the Essex side were pegged back and taken to penalties as Callum Maycock scored in the 105th-minute.

Concord Rangers missed only one of their spot-kicks.

Chris Haigh was the man of the moment as he saved Leamington’s fifth penalty to send the Beachboys through.

Having been made to wait for confirmation of the result as he prepared for his press conference 227 miles away, Cowley said: “Wow, that is such an achievement.

“I love that football club. I’m so pleased for everybody, it’s such a wonderful football club – it’s like a real family club.

“My dad went Tuesday, went to the game, and they are all so good to him.

“I’ll be forever grateful for the start they gave us in football. We had eight wonderful years there and managed to take the club from the Essex Senior League, step five of non-league, to step two, Conference South.

“Nicky [Danny’s brother] would have played in the first seven years and then we signed Alex Woodyard and he was better than Nicky, so then he started coaching” Cowley joked.

“We’ve actually done better since Nicky retired. We’re not sure whether he’s a really good coach or really bad player.

“But it’s wonderful for that club to achieve that, to get to the last eight. You don’t realise how big that is. It’s such a small club, it’s from Canvey Island.

“Canvey Island is a small island and it’s the biggest club in status but in terms of size and support it’s not the biggest. It’s unbelievable.

“They tweeted last night ‘Sleep well, be ready’ and that’s what I always used to text up to Huddersfield.

“I always message in the build-up to a game and they tweeted it.”

Concluding the conference, he laughed: “Thanks everybody, you all support Concord Rangers now.”
