Sunderland are reportedly winning the race to sign Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty. According to Gavin Berry and Scott Burns of the Daily Record, the Black Cats have made a bid to sign Docherty on loan for the rest of the season. The 23-year-old is also interesting Charlton Athletic; however, Sunderland appear to be looking to get a deal completed quickly.
Sunderland Leading the Race to Sign Rangers Midfielder Greg Docherty
Gerrard Full of Praise
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is willing to allow midfielder Greg Docherty to leave Ibrox on loan. Docherty has featured just five times this season and Gerrard wants him to get more game time. The Stadium of Light could be his destination.
Speaking in December, Gerrard said: “Greg Docherty has been absolutely magnificent with his professionalism and training really well – but in his position, we’ve had Ryan Jack who is arguably our player of the season. Greg has done absolutely nothing wrong so I have to be respectful for him and understand his situation. Maybe the best thing for him is to go play football. I can’t stand in his way then.”
Rangers Move and Shrewsbury Loan
Docherty realised his dream of playing for Rangers when he signed from Hamilton Academical in January 2018. However, since joining, he has featured just 11 times. Last season he spent a year on loan at Shrewsbury Town. He played 50 games, scored ten goals and won their Player of the Year award.
Parkinson Wants to Strengthen With Sunderland Leading the Race For Midfielder
Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his promotion-chasing squad this month. Northern Ireland international and ex-Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty has already joined and Docherty could be next. Should the 23-year-old midfielder make the move and perform as he did at Shrewsbury, the Black Cats could have a very useful midfielder to help their push for promotion.
